If You Give a Pig a Paintbrush
A pure white pig sat in front of us. Round and still. Rory dipped her red paintbrush into the bright sticky colors of paint and began to stroke over the smooth surface. I whispered in her ear to add a dab here or there. To scoop another color into the thick bristles of the brush and douse that piggy in a messy glop of spring.
I love this girl. Right when I thought life couldn’t get any better with her, it did. I was swept out of bed, buckled into our car seat, and off we went to a little red brick building. There were white pots and cups neatly placed on shelves beckoning imaginations to bring them to life through colors of wonder.
We climbed an endless flight of wooden stairs where we circled around the sounds of a book being read,
“Like most children, you have probably thought to yourself at one time or another, I bet a pig parade would be a lot of fun. And yes, a pig parade certainly sounds like fun. It’s even fun to say. Go ahead – say ‘pig parade’ a couple of times…” she said,
“…The only problem is, a pig parade is a terrible idea.”
I could have told you that – pigs don’t parade well. Rory knew it too. Nonetheless, we listened intently until Ms. B.A. was done with her splendid reading. And the excitement continued. We were joined by our good friends Mattie and RK (and their mommy, Martha too).
Painting, pondering, plunking our brushes in deeper in the most magnificent colors – the most piggiest of shades – “Bubble Gum”. We giggled our way through slimy fingers, pushing back strands of busy hair as it tried to distract our focus. What more could one ask for on a Saturday morning?
… well I’ll tell you – snacks. That’s what. Itty bitty carrots, perfectly sized bottles of water, and the most adorable box of raisins. We pigged out…I mean, we had a lovely time with our hooves and pinkies lifted.
Rumor has it, this will happen every Saturday this month. And a real, live, squealing, piglet is supposed to come (much to our disappointment she was sick this past week) from the Virginia Alliance of Potbellied Pigs – I didn’t even know there was such a support group! (I wonder how much the yearly fees are…) We might even plan to go a second time just for the honor of meeting such a fine swine!
Join us if you are in the market for a superb time of literature, the arts, and fine dining (on the raisins of course!).
