Review: Sandwich Game

Review: Sandwich Game

I remember sitting in my backyard growing up and getting down deep in the mud to make a mud sandwich. The imaginative innovation of stick-leaf-dead bug-rock sandwiches that were in high demand at our backyard drive-thru window (the line was always too long!). Where you hoped you had enough flower pedal change to make the transaction a reality.

Recently Ryder received a sandwich game, and I hoped that he would actually like it. Mainly because I was stoked to play! I stood in the store analyzing the box, flipping it over “well there isn’t mud, but bologna…this could be a cool gift.” To which my little (now nearly 21 year old) brother said, “What kid wouldn’t want a gigantic sandwich?” Good point.

We played with that game today and it didn’t disappoint one single bit. Melissa & Doug’s Get Up & Go Game “Sandwich Stacking Games” comes with 20 sandwich cards, 14 sandwich layers (bologna, pickles and tomatoes, to name a few, were our favorites), and 4 bread gloves. All sandwich components are vibrant colors that are soft and washable. Velcro accessible on BOTH sides of the sandwich layers so the gloved hands do not get frustrated picking up pieces.

We played three of ten action-packed games that are clearly and colorfully described in the instruction guide:

Fast Food: Put on the bread gloves (either two gloves each for two kids or four kids could use one glove) and race to gather the four layers shown on the card. An adult is helpful to moderate the event, sing or encourage, to keep it lively as the next card is yelled out. (Rory liked this too, she sat in my lap. But she ended up eating a card…watch out, they apparently taste as good as they look).

Topping Toss: Try to toss sandwich layers to a piece of bread across the room. Could keep points, can involve many players, its just a heck of a lot of fun. We made a peanut butter, pickle, tomato sandwich. Yum!

A Balanced Meal: This was a little tough for a two year old (the box does say the toy is ages 4+…we like to think that gives us room to grow). Players race through the course (you use the cards as markers for the course) and collect layers on their head as they zip and zoom around the card course.

Down-sides? Not many. Maybe a bag for the cards?

Up-sides? Its easy to clean up, hard to lose the big sandwich pieces, and gets kids moving while having a lot of silly fun learning to match items and take direction. It has potential for great team building and room for kids to imagine their own games.

Price? It retails for $30 but can be found at most craft stores (Michael’s, A.C. Moore, etc.) and those stores always have 40% coupons on their websites. We found ours on sale for $12.

We give this game five out of five stars. Licking up the crumbs good!
