Ryder turns three!

Ryder turns three!

Much like a good Harry Connick Jr. song or a warm blanket out of the dryer, there are some things that just make me oh-so-happy.

But one that tops them all is this unconditional love of a little redheaded boy. It melts me faster than a sticky popsicle on a hot summer day.

I was privileged on Monday, and most properly the Saturday before, to celebrate that sweet boy’s existence and constant joy in our lives. Ryder turned three!

Ryder was tickled on Monday to have his Grandma stop by for a quick birthday hello. I might as well have told him the queen was coming, it is nearly as good as saying Grandma is coming – nearly. I am not offended when he tells me that we can’t buy that twine for the tomato plants because, “Grandma uses white string, not brown.” Or that “Grandma’s snacks are better.” Akin to a confident wife when your husband says, “That’s not how my mom’s casserole comes out.” I take it as a lifelong pursuit of greatness, one that I will often, humbly, fail at. I’m okay with this.

But here’s where I achieved some epic awesomeness: I completed the tall order of a “horse cake, green horse that is, for my third birthday.” Dear Rice Krispies, you are forever in this momma’s tool bag.

We, as in Chris and one poor parental soul (thanks Martha!), hosted a dozen children sans parents (my preference…”Really, yes, please, go eat breakfast alone or go yard-saling, whatever!”).

We chalked, we ate muffins, we sprang in the sprinkler, and we melted down only to rally for presents and cake. roadrage

We celebrated our dear, sweet, number-counting, letter-loving, book-reading, Tonka-truck-pushing, redheaded boy. I’m sure he had a great time!

Thank you to my sweet buddy, Chris, for taking most of the pictures above. 12 kids and a camera? I’m not that amazing…but he is!

Who needs a fork when the cake was just that awesome?…

  1. These are absolutely precious pictures. My favorite is Ryder jumping
on the chalked driveway. He is absolutely adorable and yes, red-headed.

Good for you, Charity! Great job done once again!!

  2. Such wonderful pictures! And the expressions – WOW. Almost like being there – without the stickyness! A super way to celebrate a third birthday.. or any birthday! You are one lucky kid, Ryder.
    Love you all

  3. I can’t believe a year has passed already since celebrating Ryder’s second birthday with the Word World cake…it’s official: time does indeed fly. Love the pictures; makes me feel (almost) like I was there! (And I happen to think 3-yr-olds are the BEST…just old enough for some things, still little enough for most things…just the way I like it!) I do have red-headed child envy, though…I always wanted one & they run on my side of the family…no such luck. Will live vicariously through Ryder!

  4. One of the best parties ever! So glad we got to be a part of it! Next yr well turn the weather temp up so the kids stay longer in the sprinkler. So fun!!!

  5. Smiled as I read this and looked at the pictures! He is an awesome little red-headed boy 🙂

  6. You do such a fabulous job of making things fun! And I want to go on record as saying that it was Grandpa who had the white string rather than brown for stringing up the tomatoes but it sure cracks me up that our snacks are better!

  7. Logan had such a great time…you’re such a brave and wonderful momma 🙂 Three is such a fun age…enjoy!!

  8. 1 – you made a green horse cake. When you told me you were making that I thought you were joking. HA! And then I just see the pictures – there are no limits to your awesomeness…
2 – the little girl eating the cake by putting her whole face in it is my hero – hilarious, if only that was still acceptable at 29!
Pictures to treasure for ever and ever. Love you girl!
